Surface Mount Resistors are basically metal film or metal oxide film resistors that are mounted on rectangular ceramic cores, instead of axial leads. They are also known as Surface Mount Device (SMD) resistors. Read More
Instead of two leads coming out of axial resistors, SMD resistors have multiple pins coming out of the two ends of a rectangular package. These are referred to as Dual-Inline-Package (DIP). SMD resistors can be either soldered onto the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) or be inserted in and out of a solderless bread-board.
Connector pins are fixed to the ends of the resistive element and the entire package except the pins (including the substrate and the resistive elements) are sealed to protect the package from moisture and heat.
Like axial resistors, SMD resistors also have standard codes to indicate resistance value tolerance and power rating. EIA-96, 3-digit code and 4-digit code are some of the most widely used SMD resistor codes.
Surface mount resistors are widely used in electronic circuits.
