Typically, an electrical switch is connected in series to the equipment to be protected. Current limiting resistors are connected in parallel to the switch. Under normal working conditions, the switch is turned on which allows the full load current through. When a fault occurs, triggering an excess current in the circuit, the switch is turned off and the excess current is diverted through the current limiting resistor.
