Current Sense

Overview

Current Sense Resistors

Current sense resistors are used to measure current flow in a circuit accurately, without disturbing the circuit characteristics. Read More

To measure current in a circuit, we need to connect a low resistance in series with the power source. This resistance should be negligibly small, so that the current measurement process does not impact the main circuit function. Typical resistance values are below 50 milliohms.

As a specific case, a resistor connected in parallel to an ammeter as a shunt to expand the current measurement range is called a Current shunt resistor. However, resistors used to detect circuit high currents are collectively referred to as High current sense resistors.

The amount of current in the circuit is translated into a voltage that can be easily monitored. Typically, the voltage drop across the current sense resistor is quite low and amplifying circuits are required to measure the current flow in the circuit.

Current sense resistors find wide-spread application in power management such as:

  • Overcurrent detection
  • Motor speed control
  • Battery power regulation
  • EPS(electric power steering)
  • Air conditioners
  • Hot swap server units

Why KWK Current Sense Resistors?

KWK manufactures Current Sense resistors with extremely low values while still maintaining resistive stability.

KWK Current sensing resistors are available in both two terminal and four terminal configurations to enable efficient and accurate current measurements.

KWK offers diverse resistors by construction and mounting options to suit customer specific requirements.
